Smt. N.P.Savithramma Government Degree College for Women is the premier higher learning institution catering to the educational needs of Chittoor district in the Government sector. The institution has been established in 1982-83 with the sole aim of empowering women in all fields of national development and it is affiliated to Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. The college was accredited at B+ in 2006 and B in 2015 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college aims at achieving women empowerment by producing knowledgeable, competent, skilled, technical and resourceful women graduates and postgraduates in science, commerce, business and humanities streams. Accordingly, the college offers a wide variety of general (B.A., B.Com), restructured (B.A, Computers, B.Com, Computers, B.B.M., B.Sc., Computers and B.Sc., Microbiology) undergraduate courses and two postgraduate courses (M.Sc. Microbiology and M.Sc., Zoology), together with Ph. D and M. Phil programmes in Zoology. Additionally, the college offers some skill-based diploma programmes in Financial Management, Translation and Sericulture. In doing so, the college adopts the curriculum designed and developed by the affiliated university. However, it plays its due role in modification, enrichment and organization of curriculum at college level. More importantly, the college adopts its own curriculum in respect of career oriented certificate and diploma programmes. Student-centered learning is encouraged through study in the library, e-learning facilities, MANA TV programmes, handouts, educational CDs, Smart TV, group discussions, seminars, buzz sessions, role plays, assignments, student study projects, teach your lessons, discussions on old question papers, expert lectures, academic competitions etc. The teaching, learning and evaluation schedules of the institution are based on the academic calendar released annually by the affiliating university and the academic guidelines issued from time to time by the Commissioner of Collegiate Education (CCE), Government of Andhra Pradesh.
The admission policy of the college is governed by the rules of the affiliated university and the Government policy of reservations. In respect of all UG courses, viz., B.A., B.Com and B. Sc, the admissions are done by the college on the basis of merit in the qualifying examination. In respect of postgraduate courses and Research Programmes, the admissions are made by the affiliating university on the basis of the performance in the common entrance tests (SVUCET / RECET) conducted by it. The college has excellent research laboratories and facilities comparable to those of a university. To its credit, the college has bagged several minor research projects from UGC and two major projects, one each from UGC and DST. In total, the college has mobilized research grants to the tune of Rs. 33, 44, 865 /- from the funding agencies.
